The Trevor Project provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth ages 13-24. This life-changing organization is looking for volunteers to help with the TrevorChat program — a free, confidential and secure online messaging service available daily from 3PM – 9PM EST.

Interested applicants should be prepared to make a one-year commitment and will receive 40-plus hours of training. Learn more and apply here.

Toronto International Film Festival

How can transform your love of movies into an awesome volunteer opportunity? Help out at TIFF, duh!

The Toronto International Film Festival is fueled by a dedicated army of friendly volunteers, some of whom get to work alongside the red carpet and rub shoulders with the likes of Harry Potter (ahem, Daniel Radcliffe). Ladies Learning to Code – Note: this opportunity is open to ALL genders!

Are you a techie? Or, are you just itching to improve you computer skills this summer? The awesome organization Ladies Learning to Code is looking for volunteers for their “Kids Learning to Code” Camp. The LLC runs one-week sessions between July 14 and Aug. 29 for boys and girls ages 8-13. Some sessions include Game Makers Camp, Digital Journalism and Inventors Camp – hi, where can I sign up?

Youth Engagement Mentors must be at least 14, but you don’t need any coding experience to apply! Just a positive attitude and sense of fun is required. Oh, you’ll also get to participate in field trips to some of Toronto’s top tech and design agencies. A minimum commitment of one week is required.

Who’s a Citizen Scientist? You!

Evergreen works to solve pressing environmental issues by bringing people together and inspiring them to take action in their own communities.

Evergreen is currently working in Jericho Park and every month they bring together a group of Vancouverites to learn about the region’s ecology. They monitor the water quality of the park’s creeks, remove invasive species and replace them with native plants.

The Jericho Stewardship Group meets July 13, August 10, September 14, October 12, November 9 and December 14.

NEW YORK CITY

I recently came across a group called New York Cares. Their site is a one-stop shop for community involvement.

Seriously, all you need to do is create an online profile, attend a mandatory in-person orientation session and then BOOM, you can sign up to volunteer for a whole whack of events and organizations.

You need to be 18 to complete this process, however; younger folk aren’t left out! You can join aTeen Service Team in any borough of the city. Applications are accepted three times a year, so stay tuned for more info!

Runyon 5K

Ever dream of running the bases at Yankee Stadium? Well, we may not be able to get you on the field, but we can get you pretty close!

The Runyon 5K is looking for volunteers to help out on August 3, aka Race Day! Runners will complete a crazy route up stairs, down ramps and all around the iconic Yankee Stadium. They’re all running to support groundbreaking cancer research.
